Have you recently been diagnosed with the first stage of gum disease known as gingivitis? The good news is that right now, your condition is likely completely reversible, but to get rid of it for good, you’ll need to make some important modifications to your at-home oral hygiene routine. Here’s what you can do to stop periodontal disease in its tracks and prevent further damage to your teeth and gums!
What is Gingivitis?
Gum disease is an infection of the periodontal tissue by oral bacteria, which if left untreated could eventually cause gum recession and permanent tooth loss. While a full-fledged infection is known as periodontitis, the first stage of the condition is known as gingivitis. Thankfully, although it can be alarming to discover, this stage is usually completely reversible with an improved oral hygiene routine.
Common Symptoms of Gingivitis
Although gingivitis must be diagnosed by a dentist or periodontist, if you experience any of the following symptoms, there’s a good chance you could already have it, and you should contact your dentist to schedule an emergency appointment as soon as possible:
- Red, puffy, or inflamed gums.
- Gum tenderness or sensitivity.
- Bleeding when flossing or brushing your teeth.
- Foul smelling breath.
- Tooth sensitivity.
Can Gingivitis Be Cured?
The good news is if you’ve been diagnosed with gingivitis, it is possible to eliminate the infection and safeguard your teeth and gums from further damage. However, you must act quickly and consistently to ensure it goes away. First, be sure to brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste that contains fluoride. Floss daily to remove bacteria and debris between the teeth, and if you smoke or use tobacco products, do your best to quit.
In about two to four weeks, your gingivitis symptoms should lessen or clear up completely, however once they’re gone it’s important that you maintain these healthy habits or the infection could come back. Also, be sure to follow up with your dentist if you notice them reappearing and never skip your preventive dental checkups and cleanings every six months!
Remember, nobody wants to hear they have gingivitis, but thankfully if you do, there’s a good chance you can eliminate it before it has a chance of getting worse! Thus, if you’re diagnosed with this dangerous condition, take control of your smile with an improved oral hygiene routine, and you’ll protect your teeth and gums from further periodontal problems down the road!
