How Will Invisalign Affect the Way I Speak?

Thinking about Invisalign to straighten your teeth, but concerned about how it might affect the way you speak? You’re not alone. It’s a common question—and a completely valid one. After all, your tongue and teeth work together to form every sound you make. So, when something new enters that space—like clear aligners—it can take a little getting used to.

Here’s what to expect when it comes to Invisalign and your speech, and a few tips to help you adjust with confidence.

Can Invisalign Change Your Speech?

Yes—but usually just a little, and only at first. When you begin wearing Invisalign, your tongue has to adjust to the presence of the aligners. This can temporarily affect the way certain sounds are formed, especially “s,” “sh,” and “z” sounds.

For many people, this results in a slight lisp or a subtle change in speech clarity during the first few days or weeks of treatment. The good news is that, for most patients, this effect is temporary and very manageable.

Why Does It Happen?

Speech relies on precise movements of the tongue and how it interacts with the teeth and roof of the mouth. When you wear Invisalign, a thin layer of plastic is covering your teeth, which changes the shape and feel of your oral space—even if only slightly.

The tongue may hit the aligner instead of your tooth, or it may need to reposition slightly. As your mouth adapts to the new shape, your speech typically returns to normal.

How Long Does It Last?

For most people, any speech changes resolve within the first week or two of wearing Invisalign. Some patients don’t notice any difference at all, while others may need a bit more time to feel fully comfortable.

The more consistently you wear your aligners—ideally the recommended 20 to 22 hours per day—the faster your mouth will adjust.

Tips for Getting Used to Speaking with Invisalign

If you’re experiencing a lisp or minor speech issues with your aligners, here are some helpful tips:

  • Practice speaking out loud: Read a book, sing along to music, or practice tongue twisters. The more you talk, the faster your mouth adapts.
  • Be consistent with wear time: Taking aligners in and out too frequently can slow your adjustment.
  • Stay hydrated: Dry mouth can make any speech changes more noticeable. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Try speaking slowly and clearly: Give your mouth a little extra time to form words while you get used to the aligners.
  • Be patient: Your speech will likely improve on its own with just a little time and practice.

A slight change in speech is a normal part of adjusting to Invisalign—but it’s temporary, and most people adapt quickly. A few days of practice is usually all it takes to feel like yourself again.
