Fortunately, that\u2019s as simple as scheduling regular checkups with a dentist! Since April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, it\u2019s a great time to learn some interesting statistics about oral cancer and find out how easy screenings are. It\u2019s information that could save your life! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oral Cancer Statistics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>An estimated 53,000 people in the U.S. are newly\ndiagnosed with oral cancer each year (or 132 people each day). <\/li><li>1 person will die from it every hour, every day\nof the year<\/li><li>With early detection, the survival rate is\n85-90%.<\/li><li>Due to the HPV virus, oral cancer is\nincreasingly being found in young, healthy people who don\u2019t use tobacco <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Often Should You Be Screened and What Is a Screening Like? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The guideline for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonvilledentalspecialists.com\/is-my-mouth-healthy.html\">oral cancer screenings<\/a> is twice per year. These simple, fast, and non-invasive screenings are automatically done at each of your checkups with a dentist, so it couldn\u2019t be easier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since two pairs of eyes are better than one, both a dentist\nand hygienist will visually examine your lips, cheeks, throat, palate, and\nunder your tongue. They may also gently palpate your neck and under your jaw to\nsee if there are any lumps, bumps, or tender areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-awareness is always important as well, so be sure to\nschedule an exam if you notice any of the following symptoms on your own: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A chronic feeling that something is stuck in\nyour throat. <\/li><li>Stiffness or pain in the jaw. <\/li><li>A persistent sore throat.<\/li><li>A lump or bump that\u2019s developed recently. <\/li><li>Any sores or lesions that haven\u2019t healed within\ntwo weeks.<\/li><li>Trouble chewing or swallowing. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And, remember, there are many non-cancerous conditions that can\nlook concerning, such as canker sores, cold sores, or benign lumps of fatty\ntissue. So don\u2019t panic if you notice something, just schedule a visit to be\nevaluated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment for oral cancer has come a long way in recent\nyears, but it\u2019s most effective when done early on.
